Die shear testing, which employs an instrument with a chisel-shaped tool for shearing or pushing the die off its die pad, is a destructive test that indicates the shear strength of the die, or the relative amount of force needed to separate the die from its die pad. In this study, the effect of the die shear test equipment on the variability of the die shear strength test results was investigated. The presence of vertical movement on the shear tool as well as movement of the die pad during test were confirmed to affect the variability of the shear strength results. Any equipment used for die shear strenth testing must therefore ensure that the height of the shear tool with respect to the die pad must be accurately controlled to a single level at all times.
