This study involves the resolution of a Final Test inspection over-rejection issue that was traced to an incorrectly designed carrier tape. The vision inspection computer was rejecting good units that are not properly seated on the tape pocket, whereby the reflection of the leads on the wall of the carrier is being interpreted by the computer as a coplanarity failure. This problem was corrected through a modification of the carrier tape design. In order to minimize the positional error of the unit, the pedestal design was modified to keep the body of the unit centered in the pocket, while preventing the leads of the unit from touching the wall of the carrier tape. This solution not only eliminated the over-rejection issue - it improved the cycle time and productivity as well.
